Social Dinners and Networking

Can dining turn strangers into friends?
- What drives people to network over a dinner time?
- With all the social networking online we have these days some people have
asked me why we still have restaurants?
- After all isn’t it easier to meet people on Face Book?
Yes, I know some of these statements are strange in this day – but how much have
we looked at it? Many years ago I heard a direct selling speaker say that home
shopping parties would make shopping malls extinct. So to predict that dining
out will be lost to the history books is just as fanciful.
The need for human contact and the interchange of speech and looking into
another persons face will never fade away or ever get sidelined.
Admittedly those in the café and restaurant trade have a very hard job running
their establishments, they need to hire staff who seem move around a lot, they
have high rents to pay and they have lots of local and state regulation over
their heads. Next time you walk past a restaurant or café be thankful the owner
is doing his or her best to stay open and keep our economy going.
The Basic Desire To Meet People
In all of us, or at least most of us is a desire to meet people and make new
friends. we also desire to link up with our regular friends and families – and
meeting over breakfast, lunch or dinner is one great way to be truly present
with your friends or new acquaintances.
I’ll never forget one of my earliest dinner groups which I ran years ago.
Everyone settled down in the room and the conversation was hardly existent at
all. Then we had our first round of entrées delivered to our table. You could
hear cling clanging of forks and spoons and knives as they got into their
choices of foods.
Nearly 5 minutes into eating and the table was filled with active conversations
and it kept going on and on. The introduction of food to the table signaled a
turning point in the room and what was before a bunch of strangers became a
blend of new friends. Really amazing to watch I tell you.
Food Breaks The Ice
You know, I should have seen it coming. Some time back now, it seems I had been
to a dinner event one of my friends organized and I recall seeing a group of
strangers file into her venue and at first, nearly say nothing at all. Then
after as little as one or two courses and especially the main course on that
occasion everybody started to talk. They were very involved and it was a like
seeing a breeze of openness flow through the room. You know something it was the
food that broke the ice!
Trendwise we see that dinners are being just as hotly pursued by people
regardless of the new social media growth in the world. To some degree its
supporting the demand. This leads to one thing, as we are talking professional
people – they also demand better service and better organization than what they
would have been delivered in times past.
This in turn puts extra pressure on business groups and social dining groups to
be more switched on and ready with all the up to date means necessary in
delivering timely service and customer satisfaction.
Next time you want to hold a meeting – spoil yourself and do it over a dinner
you’ll enjoy it more and discuss more too.
